In 1906, black man went on a killing spree in Asheville, NC, killing six humans, some black, some white.  The city issued a two-day manhunt to find him.  When they finally found him, rather than put him to trial, the police lynched him on the spot.  He has since become an object of paranormal urban legend, with any memory of his race forgotten, save within the black community.

Why are all the people in the media with organizations or degrees who work for radically changing human-animal relationships white?  Jane Goodall, Marc Bekoff, G.A. Bradshaw, Karen Davis, Daphne Sheldrick–just to name a few.  Even more obvious are animal rights-identified white people, like Peter Young or Keith Mann, some of whom talk more about their vegan identities and selfless “freedom-fighting” personae than actual relationships with animals.  Where are the visions of people of color who sincerely care about radically reconstructing animal relations in American society?  Continue reading →

“The most important thing you can do [to achieve abolition] is go vegan” is what Gary Francione says on his website The Abolitionist Approach.  I would have to disagree.  I have been practicing veganism since 2004, and my reasons for going vegan were with animals in mind.  Decolonization, ecological living, spirituality, health, and my own animality didn’t come until four years later when I seriously began to question the multiple directions of veganism in the United States. I have since come to view veganism for what it is–a contextual practice that provides no foresight for long-term strategy.  In animal liberation, this is definitely the case. Continue reading →
